Home & Gardens - 3363 San Felipe Street
The home of the late Dominique and John de Menil – Houston art collectors, intellectuals, and philanthropists – was designed by architect Philip Johnson. Long and low slung with a façade of salmon-colored brick broken only by the entryway and a series of three horizontal windows, the house was Johnson’s first introduction to Texas, his first residential commission, and the first International Style house in Texas. The influence of its quiet simplicity can be seen in the later design by architect Renzo Piano of Houston’s Menil Collection, which opened in 1987. A restoration of the house, under the watchful eye of Bill Stern of Stern and Bucek Architects was completed in 2004. The home includes an eclectic collection of art and sculpture. Ralph Ellis Gunn designed the original landscaping. The gardens are native, natural, and wooded; a rose garden with its fountain, at the rear of the property, is a serene surprise.
