The Forum - 2503 Westheimer Road
The Forum of Civics began life as a country schoolhouse in 1910 far from the city limits of Houston. Within a decade the building was abandoned. In 1925 William C. Hogg, son of the first native-born governor of Texas, purchased the property and famed architect John F. Staub transformed the building into a new England-style meeting house. The Forum of Civics building was used as a public forum to develop a comprehensive urban plan for Houston and Harris County. Purchased by the River Oaks Garden Club in 1942, it is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. During the Trail, visitors can enjoy the lush outdoor gardens, an indoor garden display by Condon Gardens Nursery and Patio Shop and an exhibition of blossoms by the Camellia Society. Expert horticulturists will be on hand to answer organic gardening questions. In addition, there will be a presentation on Bayou Bend’s new Lora Jean Kilroy Visitors and Education Center, a silver LEED status building: the aspects that contribute to its sustainability status will be explained - from the heat reflective roof to the bike stands. On Friday, March 9, the Forum will feature the Buffalo Bayou Invasive Plant Eradication Unit vehicle. This unit serves as a workstation, laboratory, book mobile and beacon for public outreach in the battle against invasive plant species along the Buffalo Bayou and its tributaries and serves to promote responsible ecological stewardship. The customized truck, similar to “a rugged emergency response vehicle” will be equipped with various tools, illustrations, field guides and books. Entry to the Forum is complimentary and light refreshments will be served.
