Civic Contributions of River Oaks Garden Club

2010–2011

  • Buffalo Bayou Partnership -   To be applied to an Invasive Plant Species Eradication Unit. Specifically, funds would be used to purchase tools and materials such as shovels, rakes, axes, clippers, uniforms and other necessary equipment needed to fight invasive species.
  • Camp for All - To purchase 5 new 95 gallon Live Oaks to place in key program areas where shade is needed.
  • Student Conservation Association - To help fund SCA’s community conservation crew programs in Houston. The crews provide underserved urban teens, an opportunity to transform themselves while also transforming the green space of Houston.
  • Peckerwood Garden - To support ongoing operations:
    • Conservation: Its estimated 3000 species and cultivars of rare and fragile plants, the Garden is a successful conservation preserve and plant trial ground where new plants are tested for hardiness and garden worthiness.
    • Research and Education: Maintaining a seed bank and seed exchange program that allows other horticultural and botanical organizations to have access to its rare plants.
    • Usage of new acreage:  They have recently added 20 new acres which house a small pavilion, an office, equipment storage building, and 6 greenhouses.
  • Quentin Mease Hospital - To help renovate their only garden to create a horticulture therapy garden that will provide a healing environment to enhance the patient’s recovery during their stay in the hospital.
  • The Harris School - To rebuild a working garden destroyed by Hurricane Ike. The garden provided a quiet meditation area, a picnic spot and an outdoor science center.
  • Tanglewood Park - Funds will be used for a much needed bench in the park.
  • River Oaks Park - Help with a major landscape beautification program begun in 2009.

2009–2010

  • Bo’s Place - For seasonal spots of color to help maintain Bo’s Place’s environment
  • Brookwood - To underwrite a portion of the 2010 fall bedding plant crop
  • Buffalo Bayou Partnership - Towards trees for habitat restoration of the Tapley Tributary of Buffalo Bayou
  • Camp Allen – Towards solar panels for the “Little Green Schoolhouse,” a part
    of the Discovery Program at Camp Allen. This secular, school-year education program provides students the opportunity to learn about ecology and the environment
  • Camp for All - For ranch entrance beautification project
  • Cystic Fibrosis/University of Houston - For garden spot and irrigation at
    U of H for Cystic Fibrosis’ annual walk-Great Strides, Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis
  • DePelchin - For landscaping University of Texas charter school on DePelchin campus 
  • Durham Elementary School A&M Organic Research Garden - For a test garden and prominent signage for new Earthkind roses (collaboration of Bayou Bend through Bart Brechter and Bonnie Campbell, A&M, and ROGC)
  • Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugarland - Towards the creation of a large demonstration garden focusing on pollination and green gardening
  • Memorial Park Conservancy - To support the Memorial Park Conservancy Forestry Conservation and Management Plan
  • Neuhaus Education Center – Funding for a pair of benches and signage in the native garden and along the pathway
  • Ronald McDonald House – For fans and outdoor furniture
  • University of Houston President’s House - Wortham House - To beautify the flower beds at the front street entrance of the Wortham House

2008–2009

  • Casa De Esperanza – Money given to help complete new parking area and beautify the entry
  • Trees for Houston – Donation to be used to plant and maintain 32 (15 gallon) trees in support of tree replacement after Hurricane Ike
  • Lamar High School - H.I.S.D. – In support of the continuing grounds improvement plan, money will be used for iron and masonry works on the school’s signage along Westheimer
  • SCA – Students Conserving America – Provides money for a local high school student to participate in the summer Houston Conservation Crew program

2007–2008

  • Students Conserving America – For a high school student to participate in the Houston Conservation Crew programs
  • Houston Arboretum and Nature Center – Toward a water line for the enhancement fo the front gate and drive
  • The Seniors Place – Toward the building of the garden at their new facility
  • Clayton Library Friends – Toward the creation of a Southern Heritage garden
  • Friends of Mandell Park – Toward electricity for the garden shed and security lighting
  • Camp for All – To help fund necessary improvements to accessible nature path
  • Buffalo Bayou Partnership – Toward the Coffee Building plaza landscaping

2006–2007

  • Brookwood Community – Greenhouse Patron – Assist in funding the teaching and training component of the functionally disabled adults
  • Museum of Health & Medicine – Sensory Garden renewal
  • Lamar High School – Assist in funding the Campus Grounds Master Plan
  • Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – Bayou Bend Visitor Center
  • Trees for Houston – Branching Out Project
  • Rutherford B.H. Yates Museum – Guardian of History

2005–2006

  • Buffalo Bayou Partnership – Purchase native trees and enough wildflower seeds for a one acre of prairie
  • Camp for All – Tree planting at the wetland ecology pond near the equestrian center
  • Houston Arboretum & Nature Center – To fund the renovation of one of the two Woodway fountains at entrance
  • Houston Public Library – Friends of Texas Room – Help produce a documentary video on historic photograph collections, including gardens and flower arrangements in early Houston homes
  • Kipp School – A public charter school. Provide 3-6 oak trees in front of the new KIPP Houston High School
  • Peckerwood Gardens – Funding a guide to the Quercus collection at Peckerwood Garden
  • Urban Harvest – Grant to help build a school garden at Farias Early Childhood Center
  • Washington on Westcott Roundabout Initiative – One pair (2) of benches to be placed in the native gardens that surround the roundabout

2004–2005

  • Bo's Place – landscaping for its Memory Garden
  • Cedar Brook Elementary – landscaping for its bus drop entry
  • Houston Center for Contemporary Craft – Craft Garden
  • Urban Harvest – Emergency Garden Fund

2003–2004

  • Camp for All – To add landscaping to the existing grounds
  • Houston Zoo – To build a landscaped area in front of the Bear Habitat
  • University of Houston – To create a rose garden in front of The Moores School
    of Music
  • Seniors Place – To provide a garden at the Day Care Center for Alzheimer's patients
  • Buffalo Bayou Partnership – To plant 3 acres of wild flowers and to restore
    a key tributary in an area originally designed by Charles Tapley
  • Hope Center for the Retarded – To build a herb garden
  • Park People – To fund the Tree Registry program
